Meghan Markle and Prince Harry caused a real stir when they appeared at the David Foster Foundation’s 40th anniversary celebration in Canada. The Duchess of Sussex drew attention by choosing a luxurious black dress for the star-studded evening. While some people discussed the unusual cut of the outfit, comparing it to a “toga,” the real story was hidden in the details of her accessories.
Daily Express reveals the secret behind Meghan Markle’s unique jewelry.
A hidden tribute to Lady Di
Meghan made a touching and highly symbolic gesture by wearing butterfly-shaped earrings that once belonged to Princess Diana. Her choice had a deep connection to the location of the event.
The sentimental jewelry is several decades old, and Princess Diana wore the earrings during her royal tour of Canada in 1986. Nearly 40 years later, Meghan chose the same pieces of jewelry for her high-profile appearance on Canadian soil.
These vintage gold stud earrings, generously adorned with diamonds and dark blue sapphires, are part of Diana’s 1980s “Butterfly Suite.” Unlike the Collingwood pearl earrings often worn by the Princess of Wales, these butterflies are a much rarer piece in the royal collection.

A jewelry expert’s opinion
For the evening, Meghan chose the one-shoulder “Fabrizio” maxi dress by Greta Constantine. She elegantly pulled her hair back, fully revealing her ears and allowing Diana’s jewelry to shine.
“What works particularly well here is the balance. Meghan’s black dress creates a clean backdrop that allows the blue sapphires and the brilliance of the diamonds to stand out. The asymmetric neckline means there is no need for a necklace. Keeping the rest of the jewelry understated gives the earrings enough space to be the main focal point,” jewelry expert Oliver Hobart explained.
When else did Meghan wear the jewelry?
This is not the first time the Duchess of Sussex has chosen these sentimental pieces. She has worn them during several important moments in her life:
- during her first public appearance after announcing her pregnancy with Prince Archie in 2018;
- during her official visit to Colombia in 2024.
Meghan also completed her evening look in Canada with her familiar Cartier Love bracelet from her personal collection. But it was Diana’s delicate butterflies that carried the greatest significance, creating an invisible yet strong connection between the two royal women and their Canadian visits decades apart.
