Over time, the body’s metabolic rate changes due to lifestyle and age. Therefore, to lose weight effectively, it is important to create the right conditions and act at the proper stage of life.
Ukrainian doctor and dietitian Kateryna Tolstikova explains when metabolism works best.
What slows down metabolism the most
According to the expert, the primary issue is a reduction in physical activity and a gradual loss of muscle mass.
She explained that, after the age of 40, and sometimes even earlier, the body begins a process called sarcopenia, which is the natural physiological loss of muscle tissue.
Why muscles are critical for metabolism
Tolstikova emphasized that muscle tissue plays a key role in maintaining the body’s energy balance.
''Muscles are the generators of our energy because they burn calories even at rest, when we are doing nothing,'' she explains.
She noted that an unhealthy lifestyle, lack of a balanced diet, and irregular physical activity gradually lead to the loss of this extremely valuable tissue.
Kateryna Tolstikova points out that muscle tissue forms the body’s health framework, supporting the musculoskeletal system and metabolism. That is why insufficient or improper physical activity can negatively affect metabolic rate.
Does slow metabolism really exist?
The expert also highlighted that the term ''slow metabolism'' is often used incorrectly.
''The idea of a ‘slow metabolism’ is mostly a myth, although some variation is possible,'' the doctor explains.
She added that weight gain due to increased fat tissue can trigger chronic inflammatory processes.
''This can lead to the development of various metabolic disorders,'' Tolstikova concludes.
