Massive Russian strike on Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia leaves dozens wounded

On the night of Sunday, September 28, the Russian Federation carried out a coordinated strike on multiple Ukrainian cities. Reports indicate damage to buildings and casualties.
RBC-Ukraine summarizes what is currently known about the overnight assault.
Key questions:
- Russia deployed Shahed, Kinzhal, and Kalibr drones, as well as missiles launched from Tu-95MS bombers
- Kyiv, surrounding areas, and Zaporizhzhia were targeted
- Several homes and other buildings were destroyed, and cars caught fire

Weapons used by Russia
The Shahed drone attack began around 11:00 p.m., several hours later than usual. The enemy aimed to strike multiple Ukrainian cities, with the capital as one of the main targets. Drone attacks on Kyiv continued as of 8:30 a.m.
After 2:00 a.m., Russian forces launched MiG-31K aircraft, prompting a nationwide air raid alert in Ukraine. Missiles Kinzhal were later fired toward Khmelnytskyi region.
Additionally, Russia deployed strategic Tu-95MS bombers overnight, with monitoring channels reporting that Tu-160 bombers also took off. By morning, hostile X-101 cruise missiles and, reportedly, Kalibr missiles from sea platforms entered Ukrainian airspace.
Impact of the attacks
Kyiv
In the early hours, Kyiv came under attack by cruise missiles alongside strike drones.
Falling debris was reported in Solomianskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Dniprovskyi, Darnytskyi, and Holosiivskyi districts.
As of 9:00 a.m., over 15 locations were reported with damage, including:
- Solomianskyi district: partial destruction of a five-story building and fire in a non-residential facility
- Dniprovskyi district: vehicles set on fire
- Holosiivskyi district: a private house damaged
- Sviatoshynskyi district: debris fell both on open areas and a two-story non-residential building
- Darnytskyi district: debris landed on a private yard, a kindergarten, and a kiosk caught fire
Later, a hospital in Solomianskyi district caught fire after a missile hit the building of the Institute of Cardiology. The State Emergency Service confirmed two bodies were found on site.
According to the Kyiv City Military Administration chief, there were initially three confirmed fatalities in Kyiv, including a 12-year-old girl whose body was recovered from the debris in Solomianskyi district.
Overall, as of 9:00 a.m., 10 people were reported injured in Kyiv.
Update 9:20 a.m.: The death toll in Kyiv has risen to four.

Kyiv region
Civilian settlements in Kyiv region were also hit during the massive overnight strike. Damage has been recorded in four districts, including:
- Bucha district – fires broke out in non-residential buildings, private homes, and two vehicles
- Fastiv district – a private house caught fire
- Bila Tserkva district – fires occurred in private homes and non-residential buildings
- Obukhiv district – falling debris from a downed target caused a fire in a utility building
Later, the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Mykola Kalashnyk, clarified that a fire broke out at a bakery facility in Fastiv district, which was later extinguished.
At the same time, in Bila Tserkva, the roof of a nine-story residential building caught fire. Six vehicles were also damaged.
Casualties
According to the latest reports, seven people were injured in Kyiv region.
Zaporizhzhia
The city of Zaporizhzhia was hit twice overnight. The first strike occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m., damaging a gas station and a private home.
In the early morning, during Russia’s combined attack on Ukraine, two missiles struck Zaporizhzhia.
"As a result of the attack, production facilities at an industrial enterprise and a multi-story residential building were damaged. Several apartments in the building caught fire," Fedorov reported.
In addition, the head of the regional administration reported that Russia attempted to target the city's critical infrastructure. One educational facility was damaged by the blast wave.
Casualties
The number of people injured in Zaporizhzhia due to the Russian attack continues to rise. According to the latest data, 21 people have been injured, two of them seriously.
