Protests against Abdel Fattah el-Sisi
In 2013, former Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces Abdel Fattah el-Sisi ousted the pro-Islamic president Mohamed Morsi and became the country's new leader.
In March 2018, el-Sisi was re-elected as President of Egypt.
The last large-scale protests against his policies occurred in September 2019. Demonstrators in the cities of Giza and Mahalla demanded the president's resignation. In Suez, law enforcement used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Within a few days, over 300 protesters were arrested.
By the end of the week, the number of detainees had risen to 2,000.
