Prosecutors have notified a Russian commander of suspicion for his involvement in the mass executions of civilians and prisoners of war during the occupation of the Kyiv region in 2022, according to the Office of the Prosecutor General.

According to the investigation, during the temporary occupation of part of the Kyiv region from late February to late March 2022, the suspect — chief of staff of the 5th Separate Guards Tank Tatsyn Red Banner Order of Suvorov Brigade of the 36th Combined Arms Army of the Eastern Military District of the Russian Armed Forces — was stationed between the villages of Berezivka and Buzova in the Bucha district.

Despite being aware of the war crimes committed by his subordinates, he deliberately took no action to stop them and failed to report these crimes to the relevant authorities.

"As a result of his inaction, Russian servicemen under his command executed 19 civilians and 4 Ukrainian prisoners of war. Seventeen civilians, including a minor, and all the POWs were killed," the statement reads.

The Russian commander has been formally notified of suspicion for violating the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional killings.

Two officers of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet were recently notified of suspicion for the cruel treatment of the crew of the Ukrainian vessel Sapfir near Zmiinyi (Snake) Island.

Prosecutors have also brought charges against Russian soldier Sergey Tuzhylov, who faces a life sentence for the alleged execution of a Ukrainian prisoner of war.

Earlier, security services managed to identify Russian soldiers who were involved in the torture of civilians during the occupation of parts of the Kyiv region.
