Mass deportation of prisoners from Ecuador sparks diplomatic uproar

Ecuador is deporting hundreds of Colombian prisoners, sparking a diplomatic rift with Colombia. Bogotá called the move a violation of international law and an "unfriendly gesture," according to Bloomberg.
Ecuador’s decision to deport hundreds of Colombian prisoners has triggered a sharp reaction from Colombia, leading to mutual accusations between the two neighboring countries.
Colombia's statement
On Friday, July 25, Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement calling Ecuador’s deportation of prisoners without prior agreement a violation of international law and an "unfriendly gesture."
Colombia emphasized the importance of coordinating such decisions, especially when it concerns the rights of imprisoned citizens.
The Colombian government has long advocated for ensuring prisoners' rights. The issue gained urgency after Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced last year his intention to deport foreign prisoners, including Colombians, to reduce overcrowding in Ecuadorian prisons.
Ecuador's response
In response, on Saturday, July 26, the Ecuadorian government rejected the accusations, stating that it had informed Colombia’s consulates in Quito about the start of deportation procedures as early as July 8.
Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry also said that all actions are being carried out in cooperation with the national police and stressed that the rights and safety of the deported individuals are being properly ensured.
Who's violating prisoners' rights?
The situation is unfolding against a broader backdrop of Ecuador tightening security measures due to the activities of organized crime groups, particularly near the Colombian border.
Last month, Ecuador’s Ministry of Defense announced a 30% increase in troop numbers along the border after clashes with paramilitary groups.
Ukraine has demanded that Russia stop using the deportation of Ukrainian citizens to Georgia as a weapon. Kyiv insists that Ukrainians marked for deportation be brought directly to the Ukrainian border.
