Makeup artist identifies makeup mistakes that lead to breakouts on skin
When it comes to makeup, it's important to approach it responsibly, as some mistakes can harm the skin. There are several habits that professional makeup artists consider unacceptable and that need to be eliminated, according to the Huffpost website.
Not washing brushes and tools
Makeup artist Donni Davis explained that one of the most unhygienic practices is not washing brushes and sponges often enough.
Dead skin cells and bacteria that accumulate on brushes can lead to breakouts.
The same applies to makeup sponges. They provide a breeding ground for bacteria, especially if you use them frequently and do not store them properly.
Even your dry brushes can collect dust, dirt, and product buildup, which can lead to the growth of bacteria.
Stop sharing cosmetics with friends and family
It's important to remember the general rule: anything that directly touches the face with an applicator should not be shared with others. This includes mascaras, lip glosses, eyeliners, and makeup brushes.
Brushes can carry skin bacteria and infections, and mascara is at the top of the list of products you should not share. This is because eye infections can be easily transmitted.
Pencil eyeliners can also cause problems if shared, but they are much easier to disinfect.
Products like lip pencils and lipsticks can be easily wiped or even sprayed with alcohol for sharing. However, lip glosses, where the applicator goes back into the bottle, cannot be disinfected.
Stop using testers in stores
Testers in stores cannot be properly sanitized, so ideally, you should avoid applying them directly to your face.
When purchasing cosmetics, never apply sample products to your eyes or lips.
Experts strongly recommend disinfecting testers before use.
How you apply makeup can also harm your skin.
The makeup artist noted that one of the most unhygienic practices people engage in is using saliva as a water base for applying eyeliner or for moistening foundation sponges.
Makeup on public transport
If you have limited time and want to apply makeup while commuting to work, it can become a problem if you don't wash your hands properly or use tools and products that haven't been thoroughly cleaned.
Everything you touch can end up on your face. You might pick up microbes just by dropping concealer while applying makeup on public transport.
You should have hand sanitizer in your makeup bag and use it before and after applying makeup.
Also, avoid using mascara past its expiration date. Once opened, mascara is exposed to bacteria, and using it after any form of eye infection will only spread the bacteria.
Additionally, if you have herpes, avoid using lip products or concealers directly from the applicator, as you risk spreading the infection.
