Magnetic storms will hit the Earth again this week and they can affect the health of many people. In the middle of the week, stronger storms are expected, which are worth preparing for.

What is a magnetic storm

Magnetic storms are powerful geomagnetic phenomena that are caused by activity on the Sun. Their impact can vary from weak fluctuations to powerful shocks that can cause problems with communications, power grids, and deterioration of health for weather-dependent people and everyone else.

The main cause of magnetic storms is solar flares, which cause plasma to be emitted into space. When these streams reach the Earth's magnetic field, geomagnetic disturbances occur.

When will there be magnetic storms

January 27: calm day, geomagnetic activity index Kp 2. The influence of geomagnetic disturbances is weak or not felt at all.

January 28: a magnetic storm of medium intensity is expected, Kp 4. People who are sensitive to weather changes may feel mildly unwell.

January 29: the peak of magnetic storm activity. It will reach Kp 5-6. On this day, most people may experience malaise, headaches, decreased concentration and performance.

January 30: The magnetic storm will subside, but the fluctuations remain at Kp 4. It is recommended to get more rest.

January 31: stabilization of the magnetic field, decrease in geomagnetic activity to Kp 3. The impact on humans is moderate to weak.

It is worth noting that all scientists' forecasts are preliminary, as solar activity is very variable and the situation can change very quickly.

What is the impact of a magnetic storm on humans

Moderate magnetic storms can only be felt by people who are more susceptible to fluctuations in weather and geomagnetic conditions. Storms with indices above 4 are storms that can be felt by most people on the planet.

Red-level storms can also disrupt communication sources such as radio frequencies, satellites, GPRS, and mobile communications.

Scientists have conducted many studies on magnetic storms, and many of them confirm their impact on humans. On such days, people are more likely to complain of feeling unwell, fatigue, and exacerbation of chronic diseases.

One study found that strong magnetic storms can affect bioelectrical processes in the human body and cause sleep disturbances, decreased performance, increased anxiety, and irritability.

The most common symptoms are

  • Headache
  • Migraine
  • Dizziness
  • Fog in the head
  • Nausea
  • Rapid fatigue
  • Drowsiness during the day
  • Insomnia at night
  • Decreased concentration and performance
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Depressive states
  • Aggression
  • Increased anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Exacerbation of chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases

How to survive magnetic storms without stress

Doctors give general recommendations and advise to get more rest and follow a normal daily routine, namely:

  • Get enough sleep
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Walk in the fresh air
  • Ventilate the room
  • Reduce physical and psycho-emotional stress
  • Avoid stress and quarrels
  • Give up coffee, energy drinks, alcohol, smoking
  • Eat a full and nutritious diet
  • Spend the evening in peace
  • Reduce the use of gadgets
