Magnetic storms expected over the weekend won’t be too strong, but they could still cause discomfort for some people. That’s why it's important to know on what days geomagnetic activity will be higher and how to protect your body from its negative effects. Here is what scientists are forecasting for the coming days.

Magnetic storm forecast for May 16–19

Friday, May 16: Weak geomagnetic activity, Kp-3

Saturday, May 17: Slight increase in geomagnetic activity to Kp-4, which corresponds to a moderate magnetic storm; possible blood pressure fluctuations

Sunday, May 18: Moderate activity expected, Kp-4; short-term, localized geomagnetic storms possible

Monday, May 19: Weak geomagnetic activity, no expected impact on well-being

What is a magnetic storm?

A magnetic storm occurs due to plasma eruptions on the Sun’s surface. When these particles enter Earth's magnetic field, they trigger geomagnetic disturbances that affect satellites, radio communications, and people’s health.

How magnetic storms affect well-being:

At-risk groups include people with chronic illnesses, those with high blood pressure, weather-sensitive individuals, pregnant women, children, and the elderly.

Possible symptoms:

  • Headaches, dizziness, migraines
  • Blood pressure fluctuations
  • Drowsiness or insomnia
  • Irritability, apathy
  • Fatigue, reduced concentration
  • Exacerbation of chronic conditions

How to reduce the impact on your body:

During magnetic storms, it’s recommended to:

  • Sleep 7–9 hours per night and go to bed before 11:00 PM
  • Drink plenty of clean water
  • Limit intake of coffee, alcohol, and fast food
  • Reduce physical and emotional stress
  • Spend more time outdoors
  • Ventilate indoor spaces
  • Limit the use of gadgets in the evening
  • Avoid stress and emotional swings

People with chronic conditions should monitor their blood pressure and general health. If symptoms worsen, they should consult a doctor.
