Macron says he has 'no doubt' Russia will target Olympics
French President Emmanuel Macron has made a statement about Russia's interference in the 2024 Olympic Games to be held in Paris this summer, The Guardian reports.
According to him, he has "no doubt" that Russia will target the Olympic Games in Paris this summer.
"I have no doubt whatsoever, including in terms of information," Macron says, answering a reporter's question about Russia's threat to the Olympics.
His comment, made at an event in Paris dedicated to the opening of the new Olympic Aquatics Center, is "the most explicit acknowledgment to date of foreign threats to the security of the games."
Macron has recently taken a tougher stance on the war in Ukraine, saying that Moscow must be defeated, although he made it clear that France has no intention of inciting military action against Russia.
Earlier this week, French Foreign Minister Stéphane Sejourne said that France would propose EU-wide sanctions against those behind the spread of "disinformation."
Olympics 2024
The 2024 Summer Olympics are the 33rd Summer Olympics scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024. The official bidding process began on January 15, 2015, and closed on September 15, 2015. On September 13, 2017, at its 131st session in Lima, the IOC officially announced Paris as the capital of the Olympic Games.
Ukraine has already appealed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to suspend some Russian athletes from participating in the Summer Games in Paris due to their violation of the "neutrality" conditions.
According to the IOC's decision, Russia as a state cannot participate in the Games, but its athletes are allowed to compete under the white flag as independent athletes.
