US President Donald Trump announced a military operation in Chicago aimed at mass deportations of illegal immigrants from the region.

Trump posted on social media about the "smell of deportations in the morning" and hinted at Chicago.

"I love the smell of deportations in the morning… Chicago is about to find out why it's called the Department of War," he wrote.

He also shared an image of himself, apparently set against a Chicago backdrop, with the caption "Chipocalypse Now," likely referencing the film Apocalypse Now.

The phrase "I love the smell of deportations in the morning" appears to echo a line from the movie, spoken by Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore: "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."

Trump renames the Department of Defense as the Department of War

On September 5, President Trump signed an executive order restoring the US Department of War.

The order will require all executive departments and agencies to recognize and use the new name in internal and external communications.

Supporters say the move will create a more transparent military identity and symbolize a new American strength. They note that the US military was officially called the Department of War until 1947.

Critics warn that the renaming could reinforce an aggressive image of the US and strain relations with allies and rivals.

Pentagon officials have reportedly expressed outrage over the President's executive order.

Last month, following a successful crime reduction campaign in Washington, the federal government announced plans to deploy the National Guard to Chicago and New York.
