Love of certain food flavors can predict how long you live

Scientists from Japan have reported that people with a reduced sensitivity to salt may have an increased risk of premature death, according to JAMA.
What the study showed about taste and longevity
The study included more than 6,000 adults aged 40 and older. Scientists assessed the participants' sensitivity to salt by offering them to taste different solutions with this flavor.
The results showed that people with the lowest salt sensitivity had a 20% higher risk of dying from any cause over the next 18 years compared to people with the highest salt sensitivity.
This association remained significant even after controlling for other factors such as age, gender, smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity.
The researchers believe that low salt sensitivity may be associated with a number of factors that may affect life expectancy.
"People with low salt sensitivity may consume more salt, which can lead to high blood pressure and other health problems. In addition, reduced salt sensitivity may be a sign of other health problems, such as kidney disease," the study authors say.
The researchers also said that people with high salt sensitivity have a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.
"It is possible that people with high salt sensitivity are more likely to follow a healthy diet, which may protect them from cardiovascular disease," the study says.
Experts note that this study is observational, so it cannot prove that reduced salt sensitivity is a direct cause of premature death. However, the results of the study suggest that salt sensitivity may be an important factor to consider when assessing the risk of death.
