Lithuania to transfer its equipment from decommissioned nuclear and thermal power plants to Ukraine
Lithuania has decided to expand its support for Ukraine's energy sector. It will provide its energy equipment from decommissioned nuclear power plants and thermal power plants, according to a statement by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal at a briefing with Lithuanian colleagues.
As the Ukrainian prime minister noted, Lithuania will continue to assist Ukraine in its recovery.
"Today, we agreed on further effective support for Ukraine's energy sector, specifically on the transfer of equipment from Lithuania's decommissioned nuclear and thermal power plants," Shmyhal clarified.
He thanked Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas and the Lithuanian people for their support.
Russia's strikes on Ukraine's energy sector
Russia continues to target energy facilities in Ukraine, using its missiles and drones for these attacks.
Russian strikes severely damaged Ukrainian thermal power plants, resulting in sharply decreased electricity generation in the country.
Currently, nuclear power plants remain the primary source of generation. However, the Russian forces are targeting distribution stations of nuclear power plants in attempts to organize a blackout in Ukraine.
Against this backdrop, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has requested 19 air defense systems from Western partners to protect these distribution stations.
