Italian film director and screenwriter Tinto Brass died on November 4 at the age of 93. He gained international recognition as one of the most prominent filmmakers in erotic cinema, according to ANSA.

Tinto Brass died in Rome on Wednesday morning. His death was confirmed to the news agency by his wife, Caterina Varzi, and his children, Bonifacio and Beatrice Brass.

The family plans to hold a private funeral.

What is Tinto Brass known for?

The director's real name was Giovanni Brass. He was born on March 26, 1933, in Milan, Italy.

He studied law before moving to Paris in 1957, where he worked with the French Cinémathèque.

Brass made his directorial debut in 1963. His early works were associated with avant-garde cinema, satire, and political filmmaking. He later turned his attention to the erotic genre.

Among the director's best-known films are:

  • "Salon Kitty" (1976);

  • "The Key" (1983);

  • "Paprika" (1991).

He also worked on "Caligula." However, producer Bob Guccione re-edited the film and added explicit scenes without Brass's knowledge.

As a result, the director refused to recognize the final version of the film as his own.

In September 2026, Brass's work was honored at the Venice Film Festival.

Ahead of the festival's official opening, a restored 4K version of his film "Col cuore in gola" (1967) was screened.

This year, the director also received the Pietro Bianchi Award from the Italian National Union of Film Journalists.
