Former AC Milan captain and 1982 World Cup winner Franco Baresi has died at the age of 66. The legendary Italian defender had been battling a serious illness for a long time, according to AC Milan's official website.
A devastating loss for the club
The tragic news was officially confirmed by the Rossoneri on Friday, July 31. According to media reports, the former Milan captain had recently been fighting a serious illness.
The first rumors about his declining health and possible death surfaced on July 29, but the club dismissed them at the time, saying that Franco was going through a difficult period.
"The history of AC Milan is in tears following the death of Franco Baresi. His example and the depth of his character, just like his iconic No. 6 shirt, will forever remain an inseparable and fundamental part of the club's DNA and journey. The condolences AC Milan extends to Franco Baresi's entire family are shared by every Rossoneri supporter in this difficult moment," the Italian giants said in a statement.

Baresi's legendary career and legacy
Franco Baresi spent his entire professional career with AC Milan, representing the club from 1978 to 1997.
Over 19 seasons with the Rossoneri, the defender made 716 appearances, scoring 33 goals and providing 24 assists. He won 20 trophies with the club, including six Serie A titles and three European Cup (Champions League) crowns. In recognition of his extraordinary contribution, AC Milan permanently retired his iconic No. 6 shirt.
Baresi also enjoyed an outstanding international career with Italy, earning 81 caps for the Azzurri. He completed a full set of FIFA World Cup medals, winning the 1982 World Cup, finishing runner-up in 1994, and claiming third place in 1990. He also won a bronze medal at UEFA Euro 1988.
