Most people believe hot water works better on dirt, but that’s not always the case. Some types of stains actually set under high temperatures, while cold water removes them much more effectively, according to Real Simple.

What stains cold water removes

Protein-based stains — such as sweat, blood, dairy products, eggs, and baby food — should be washed in cold water. Hot water can essentially “cook” the proteins into the fibers, making the stain much harder to remove.

Cold water should also be used for synthetic fabrics, mixed-color laundry, lightly soiled items, delicate materials, and pre-treated stains.

In addition, cold water is gentler on fabrics over time. Colors stay brighter, and fibers break down more slowly.

When to use hot water

Hot water should be used to remove stains caused by cooking grease, oil, waxy substances, and heavily embedded dirt or odors in workwear.

Hot water dissolves oily substances, which are semi-solid at room temperature. Cold water simply cannot do this as effectively, even with strong detergent.

It is also preferable when washing bed linens and bathroom or kitchen towels, where disinfection is important, not just stain removal.

What products effectively remove stains

Basic household cleaning agents:

  • Laundry detergent (powder or liquid) — the base for most stains, especially fresh ones
  • Stain removers (oxygen-based or enzyme-based) — effective on protein, grease, and organic stains
  • Soap (bar or liquid) — works well for fresh stains
  • Bleach — oxygen bleach is safer for colored fabrics, while chlorine bleach should be used only for whites and with caution
  • Baking soda — absorbs grease and odors, useful for pre-treatment
  • Vinegar (9%) — helps with sweat and rust stains
  • Lemon juice — a natural whitener for light-colored fabrics
