Russian attack on Ukraine – January 5

Overnight into Monday, Russia attacked Ukraine with both drones and missiles. Reported targets include Kyiv, Chernihiv, Slavutych, Poltava, and Kharkiv.

During the night, Russia scrambled MiG-31K aircraft twice, which carry Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. Monitoring channels also reported that the enemy deployed strategic Tu-95MS bombers. In addition, groups of attack drones targeted Ukraine.

An air raid alert in Kyiv was issued during the first takeoff of the MiG-31Ks. However, the alarm did not stop after the planes landed, as the capital was already under threat from drones.

The Kyiv region officials reported that drones were detected in the region at 1:20 a.m., prompting air defense forces to respond. By 2:30 a.m., the sound of anti-aircraft systems was audible directly in the city.

A short time later, Kyiv City State Administration head Tymur Tkachenko reported that a fire had broken out in the Obolonskyi district of the capital.
