The Kursk operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine became one of Ukraine's main victories since the start of the full-scale war. To counter Ukraine, Russia had to pull almost 60,000 troops off the front, RBC-Ukraine reports, citing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who spoke during a Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in the Ramstein format.

"Take the Kursk operation – it's one of our biggest wins, not just last year, but throughout the war. Russia had to pull almost 60,000 troops off the Ukrainian front to deal with it," Zelenskyy stated.

Ukrainian leader reminded that on Monday, January 6, five months had passed since the start of the Kursk operation. Ukrainian forces continue to maintain a buffer zone on Russian territory.

"Many of Russia's threats and bold claims turned-out to be bluffing – especially after Ukrainians moved into the Kursk region. And I'm sure even more of their threats will prove to be bluffs if we all work even harder together to push Russia toward peace," Zelenskyy emphasized.

Battles in Kursk region

The operation of Ukraine's Armed Forces in the Kursk region began in August 2024. Currently, the Defense Forces of Ukraine maintain control over territory in the border areas of the Kursk region, although part of the territory has been lost.

At the end of last week, reports emerged online about the resumption of Ukrainian offensive actions in the Kursk region. The Russians complain about assaults on several fronts. The Ukrainian command has yet to comment on the situation.
