Kurdish fighters move on Iran from Iraq as ground offensive reportedly starts

Kurdish armed formations have begun a military operation on Iranian territory, occupying positions in the country’s border areas, reports i24NEWS.
Kurdish forces launch an operation against Iran
Kurdish armed groups based in Iraq have announced the start of a military operation against Iran. This was stated by a representative of the Coalition of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan.
According to media reports, fighters linked to the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) began moving and deploying to combat positions inside Iran as early as Monday, March 2. The active phase of ground operations reportedly began around midnight.
Movement of forces near the city of Marivan
According to a representative of Kurdish forces, the Iranian side carried out an evacuation of the border city of Marivan on March 3. Defensive lines began to be formed in this area.
At the same time, PJAK units took positions in the southern mountainous areas around Marivan in western Iran. It is claimed that thousands of fighters were deployed there.
Structure of PJAK armed units
PJAK has two main armed structures. These include the YRK (Eastern Kurdistan Defense Units) and the female formations HPJ (Women’s Defense Forces).
A representative of Kurdish forces noted that these units were created based on the model of Kurdish armed formations operating in Syria.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth warned during a closed briefing for US lawmakers about a serious threat from Iranian Shahed strike drones. According to him, even modern air defense systems cannot guarantee the interception of all such drones, creating additional security risks.
US forces conducted an operation in which the leader of an Iranian unit was eliminated. That unit was allegedly involved in preparing an assassination attempt against Donald Trump. According to sources, this structure was responsible for organizing the planned attack.
