Kinmemai Premium: The world’s most expensive rice
Rice is one of the most popular foods globally, used in a variety of dishes. There are many different varieties, which differ not only in taste but also in exclusivity and price, reports Oddity Central.
World's most expensive rice
Kinmemai Premium rice is the perfect choice for those searching for something unique. This elite variety, created by the Japanese company Toyo, is more nutritious than other types and boasts a rich, nutty flavor. The Guinness World Records officially recognize it as the most expensive rice in the world.
Thanks to a unique polishing process, the rice grains resemble tiny diamonds, as the waxy layer is carefully removed.
Its properties
Kinmemai Premium is six times richer in lipopolysaccharides (LPS) — natural immune boosters that help strengthen health and fight diseases — than regular white rice. It also contains 1.8 times more fiber and seven times more vitamin B1. The rice does not require rinsing before cooking.
Kinmemai Premium consists of the valuable Koshihikari and Pikamaru varieties, which Toyo specialists carefully select. This is part of the reason for its extraordinarily high price.
Promoted as "world’s best rice," 140-gram packages are sold for approximately $120.
In 2016, it set a record as the "most expensive rice" at $109 per kilogram, but inflation has since pushed its price even higher. Initially available only in Japan, Kinmemai Premium can also be purchased in Singapore.
This rice is not suitable for sushi, as it lacks the necessary starch for the dish. To fully enjoy its sweet, nutty flavor, it is recommended to serve Kinmemai Premium with simple Japanese dishes such as ochazuke or Tamago kake gohan.

Why Kinmemai Premium is so expensive
The unique processing method is a key factor. Developed in Japan 17 years ago, Kinmemai Premium is produced using a special technology that preserves the internal layer of the grain, which is typically removed during polishing. This process retains all the beneficial nutrients and distinctive flavor.
The exceptional quality of the grains also contributes to its high cost. Each grain is carefully selected to ensure the perfect texture and flavor. The rice has a delicate aroma, a creamy texture, and a sweet aftertaste.
Exclusivity is another factor driving the price. The production of Kinmemai Premium is limited, making it available only to a select group of buyers. This rice is often associated with luxury and high status, and it is served in the finest restaurants worldwide.
