Kennedy relative arrested in absentia in Russia for fighting on Ukraine’s side

A Moscow court has arrested Conor Kennedy, grandnephew of the 35th US President John F. Kennedy, in absentia. Russian authorities accuse him of mercenary activity for taking part in combat on Ukraine’s side, ASTRA reports.
Details of the court ruling and involvement in the war
According to the outlet, a Moscow court has ordered the arrest in absentia of a foreign national who joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The foreign volunteer is accused of taking part in combat as part of the International Legion.
Conor Kennedy previously said that he decided to join Ukraine’s defense because he was deeply affected by Russia’s aggression.
He said he went to the front without telling almost anyone about his plans and gave his real name to only one person in Ukraine to avoid receiving special treatment.
"Going in, I had no prior military experience and wasn’t a great shot, but I could carry heavy things and learned fast. I was also willing to die there. So they soon agreed to send me to the northeastern front. This war, like all others, is horrific. The people I met were the bravest I have ever known," Kennedy said.
Volunteer Day and support from allies
Ukraine marks Ukrainian Volunteer Day on March 14. The special date was established to honor soldiers who answered the call to defend the country against Russian aggression starting in 2014.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the volunteer movement became a strong foundation of the Ukrainian army. Currently, nearly 6,500 people join the Armed Forces of Ukraine every month.
Military brotherhood is also supported abroad. In particular, in March 2026, Polish President Karol Nawrocki signed a law providing important guarantees for Polish volunteers.
The document fully exempts Polish citizens who defend Ukraine as part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from liability.
