Keep medicine close as powerful mid-April magnetic storms approach
Magnetic storm forecast for the coming week (photo: Freepik)
From April 13 to 17, the geomagnetic situation will remain mostly stable. Despite expectations of a series of magnetic storms, no strong geomagnetic disturbances are forecast during this period. The largest fluctuations are expected only at the beginning of the week.
RBC-Ukraine explains when a strong magnetic storm may arrive and how to protect your health from its effects.
Magnetic storms April 13–17: forecast
In the second half of April, no significant geomagnetic storms are expected. Forecast data show that conditions will be much calmer than last week. A slight increase in activity is possible only on April 13, but even this does not reach the level of a full magnetic storm.
April 13
Weak geomagnetic fluctuations are possible. This is a so-called moderate yellow level, which rarely causes serious effects. Such fluctuations are usually felt only by weather-sensitive people.
April 14–17
Mostly calm conditions without sharp changes. Geomagnetic activity remains within normal limits.
When stronger storms are expected
According to preliminary estimates, stronger geomagnetic activity may occur closer to April 18. Already on the evening of April 17, more powerful geomagnetic fluctuations may begin.
What is a magnetic storm
A magnetic storm is a response of Earth’s magnetic field to powerful bursts of energy from the Sun. When a strong solar flare or coronal mass ejection occurs, charged particles reach our planet and interact with the magnetosphere.
This can cause:
- Fluctuations in the geomagnetic field;
- Disruptions in satellite operations;
- Communication problems;
- Bright auroras;
Sometimes such phenomena also affect human well-being, especially in weather-sensitive individuals.
How magnetic storms affect humans
Although the impact of magnetic storms on the human body is still debated in the scientific community, thousands of weather-sensitive people consistently report similar symptoms. People with cardiovascular diseases and chronic conditions are most affected.
Most common symptoms:
- Sudden headaches and migraines;
- Blood pressure spikes;
- Joint and muscle pain;
- Sleep disturbances (insomnia or excessive sleepiness);
- General weakness, apathy, and fatigue;
Most sensitive groups:
- Weather-sensitive individuals;
- People with cardiovascular diseases;
- Elderly people and pregnant women;
- Those suffering from chronic fatigue or constant stress;
How to cope with magnetic storms more easily
To reduce the impact:
- Drink more water;
- Avoid overexertion;
- Reduce caffeine and alcohol intake;
- Rest more and maintain good sleep hygiene;
