The European Union would like the United States to keep its word and strengthen sanctions against Russia for its refusal to comply with an unconditional ceasefire, stated the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, The Guardian reports.

"America said that if Russia doesn’t agree on an unconditional ceasefire, then there are going to be consequences. So we want to see those consequences, also from the US side," Kallas said.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in turn, said that after yesterday's conversation between President Donald Trump and European leaders, the EU would "increase pressure" on Moscow by imposing new sanctions.

US sanctions against Russia

Recently, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the United States and Europe would decisively increase sanctions against Russia if Moscow does not conduct peace talks with Ukraine in a spirit of goodwill.

Trump claimed that Washington would impose sanctions against Russia if negotiations with Ukraine failed. According to him, sanctions would be devastating for Moscow.

As noted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Washington gave Moscow time to make progress in the negotiations, but patience is running out.
