EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemned the intrusion of a Russian drone into Romanian airspace, calling it a “reckless escalation,” according to her post on social platform X.

Commenting on the incident that took place on September 13, Kallas said that Russian drone violations of Romanian airspace represent yet another unacceptable breach of EU member states’ sovereignty.

“This continued reckless escalation threatens regional security. We stand in solidarity with Romania. I am in close contact with the Romanian government,” she stressed.

What happened

Yesterday evening, on August 13, Russians once again attempted to attack Ukraine with drones.

Enemy UAVs were detected in the Volyn region, which borders Poland, prompting Polish fighter jets to be scrambled.

At the same time, another drone entered Romanian airspace after being tracked over the Odesa region.

Soon after, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that a Russian drone had violated Romanian airspace, remaining there for about 50 minutes.

In response, he urged the West not to wait until ballistic missiles strike, but instead to act preemptively - particularly by strengthening joint defense.
