After Oleksandr Usyk declined to defend his WBO title, the organization elevated Fabio Wardley to champion. However, the Briton won't be able to keep the belt without a mandatory defense, Sky Sports reports.

WBO preparing a title fight

The WBO announced that Moses Itauma will become the mandatory challenger if he defeats Jermaine Franklin on January 24. In that case, the organization will require Wardley to defend the title in spring 2026.

Itauma is viewed as the leading candidate because he has shown consistent progress in the heavyweight division and is already considered one of Britain's most promising boxers.

Reserve options already set

If Itauma loses or becomes unable to challenge for the fight due to other circumstances, the WBO has an alternative list.

It includes Daniel Dubois, Derek Chisora, and Anthony Joshua. Each of them may get a chance to face the new champion depending on the results of their upcoming fights and their readiness to negotiate.

Situation in the division

Following the change of champion, the WBO heavyweight division is entering a new phase.

The final challenger is expected to be determined soon, and Wardley is preparing for his first defense, which will be crucial for his status in the division.
