The Japanese government has imposed a new package of sanctions on Russia over its military aggression against Ukraine and as part of international efforts to achieve peace, according to Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Japanese government's new decision provides for the freezing of assets of 33 Russian companies and nine individuals.

A special authorization regime will now apply to sanctioned individuals and organizations. It covers payments and capital transactions, including agreements on bank deposits, trusts, and loans.

Sanctions against the shadow fleet and foreign companies

Separately, Tokyo banned exports to four foreign companies from Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates that are not registered in Russia or Belarus.

In addition, 35 vessels from Russia's shadow fleet were placed under restrictions. Services and financial transactions related to the purchase, sale, lease, or charter of these vessels will now require special authorization.

The new restrictions on fulfilling obligations and providing services take effect on October 2. At the same time, they do not apply to obligations under contracts concluded before that date, provided that they are fulfilled or the relevant services are provided by November 1 this year.

On October 1, the UK announced a new sanctions package against Russia. The restrictions targeted 31 individuals and entities, shadow fleet vessels, and torturers.

A bipartisan group of US lawmakers is also urging President Donald Trump to increase sanctions pressure on Russia and apply the Graham Act.
