Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani responded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s criticism of the EU, emphasizing that "Europe has guaranteed Ukraine’s independence," Il Giornale reports.

Commenting on Zelenskyy’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Tajani accused the Ukrainian leader of being ungrateful for the EU’s support.

"It seems to me that he is not very generous toward Europe," the Italian Foreign Minister said.

He added that Europe has done everything possible to preserve Ukraine’s independence.

"I believe Europe has guaranteed Ukraine’s independence by doing everything possible to provide political, financial, and military support to this country," Tajani stated.

During his speech in Davos, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that today the EU relies largely on faith that NATO will act if there is a threat.

The Ukrainian leader stressed that Europe needs unified armed forces to defend itself and must know how to protect itself. He also noted that the EU did not spend enough on defense until the US pressured Europe.

Zelenskyy added that NATO exists thanks to the belief that the US will act, and he raised the question of who would respond if the Russian leader decided to seize Lithuania or strike Poland.

He also said that Ukraine is capable of helping NATO sink Russian ships near Greenland, claiming they can "sink near Greenland just as they do near Crimea."

Additionally, Zelenskyy stated that US President Donald Trump could end the war in Ukraine, as he talks with Vladimir Putin as an equal.

The Ukrainian leader emphasized that the United States is far stronger than Russia, arguing that the American military is much more powerful thanks to the experience gained in the war in Ukraine.
