Italy hit by its most powerful earthquake in four decades, injuries reported

A strong 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck the resort town of Pozzuoli near Naples, according to Italian agency ANSA.
Seismographs recorded the strongest quake since the bradyseism phenomenon returned to the region.
It was also the strongest earthquake to hit the area in the past 40 years, surpassing the magnitude 4.6 tremor recorded on June 30, 2025.
How many people were injured
Immediately after the earthquake, authorities reported eight people injured. The number later rose to 21, with two people in critical condition.

Aftershocks still continue
Following the main quake, seismographs recorded at least 30 aftershocks of varying intensity. The strongest measured magnitude 3.8. Seismic activity in the region is still ongoing.
Pozzuoli suffered the most extensive damage. On Via Pergolesi, part of a building's wall collapsed onto parked cars.
The tremors were also clearly felt in Naples, particularly in neighborhoods closest to the coastline.
Earthquakes in different parts of the world have repeatedly caused widespread destruction and significant loss of life.
Just days ago, Japan experienced one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded.
Meanwhile, an earthquake in Venezuela claimed at least 1,700 lives. More than 15,000 people were left homeless.
