This is not the first time a battle like the one that recently took place in the Sumy region's border area, near Zhuravka. For example, Russian subversive reconnaissance groups also tried to take the village of Lukashivka but suffered significant losses, according to Volodymyr Artiukh, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration.

According to him, the line of contact (with Russia - ed.) is 560 km long, and almost every day there are firefights, and clashes between special forces of Russian subversive groups trying to enter (the territory of Ukraine - ed.).

"Therefore, what you mentioned about Zhuravka is probably not an exception, but rather a system. Our armed forces use the appropriate units to destroy the enemy who tries to enter. In Zhuravka, it was an attempt to concentrate small units, but the enemy got a response," says Artiukh.

He also notes that several subversive reconnaissance groups also attempted to enter Lukashivka.

"They were also destroyed, there are dozens of eliminated Russian soldiers," adds the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration.

In a 1 July report by the Institute for the Study of War, analysts analyze geolocation footage published on 30 June showing "Ukrainian forces shelling limited Russian positions in houses and forest north of Zhuravka, Sumy region".

"It is currently unclear whether Russian forces have established an enduring presence in these positions, potentially in preparation for a larger Russian offensive operation into Sumy region, or if these positions were the result of a limited cross-border Russian raid into Sumy region," the document says.

Russian subversive reconnaissance groups in Sumy region

Russian subversives are constantly trying to break through the border in the Sumy region. In May, Russian subversive reconnaissance groups were reported to have become more active in the region.

For example, in April, Ukrainian border guards engaged in a battle with a Russian subversive group in the Sumy region. The Russian occupiers prepared by setting up an ambush.
