Israeli Chief of Staff and IDF Southern Command head announce resignations
IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and IDF Southern Command head Yaron Finkelman, responsible for operations in Gaza, have announced their resignations, NEWSru.co.il reports.
Herzi Halevi
Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi stated he would step down on March 6, 2025, taking personal responsibility for the failure of the Israeli army on October 7, 2023.
Halevi stated in his announcement that during his remaining time as Chief of Staff, he would complete the investigation and support the efforts of the Israel Defense Forces apparatus in addressing security challenges.
He also confirmed sending resignation letters to Israel's Defense Minister and Prime Minister.
Yaron Finkelman
Shortly after Halevi’s announcement, Major General Yaron Finkelman, IDF Southern Command head, also declared his decision to resign.
Finkelman did not provide a reason for his resignation, and the exact date of his departure remains unclear.
The day before, the Israeli far-right Otzma Yehudit party left the coalition in protest of the agreement with Hamas. The move prompted the resignations of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, Heritage Minister Amihai Eliyahu, and Minister of the Negev, Galilee, and National Resilience Yitzhak Wasserlauf.
