Israeli army struck military targets in Syria

On the evening of Monday, March 17, the Israel Defense Forces carried out strikes on military targets in southern Syria. These were deemed to pose a threat to the State of Israel, according to the IDF's Telegram channel.
It is reported that the military targeted command centers and military facilities containing weapons and military equipment from the previous regime of Bashar al-Assad, which the current authorities are attempting to make suitable for reuse.
"The presence of military assets in southern Syria poses a threat to the State of Israel. The IDF will not allow the presence of military threats in southern Syria and will operate against it," the message states.
It was also added that recently, the IDF struck the military facilities of Hezbollah in Lebanon, where terrorists and the group's weapons were found.
Israeli military officials stated that terrorist activity at these facilities poses a threat to the State of Israel and constitutes a flagrant violation of agreements between Israel and Lebanon.
Situation in Syria
In December 2024, fighters from the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham captured key cities in Syria, including the capital, Damascus. Dictator Bashar al-Assad lost power and fled with his family to Russia. The leader of the movement, Ahmed al-Sharaa, was appointed as the interim leader of the country.
Since then, the Israeli and US. armies have periodically attacked the positions of Islamic groups. Through these actions, the governments of these countries aim to prevent the expansion of Islamist influence amid the ongoing instability and political crisis in Syria.
In early March, Assad's supporters launched attacks on provinces in Syria. As a result of clashes with the new government's forces, 48 people were killed from both sides.
Syrian leader al-Sharaa described these clashes as an attempt by Assad's supporters to plunge the country into a civil war.
