Israel says it struck senior Hamas commanders in Gaza - Reuters
The Israeli military announced a successful strike on senior Hamas commanders operating in a command center located within the humanitarian zone in the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis, according to Reuters.
However, the names of the eliminated Hamas commanders were not made public.
"These terrorists were directly involved in the execution of the October 7th Massacre and have been recently operating to carry out terror activities," Israeli Defense Forces says.
The targets of the strike were the heads of Hamas's aviation unit and the surveillance and targeting department.
The Israeli military also stresses that the casualty figures published by the Hamas-run authorities in Gaza do not correspond to the information available to the IDF, in particular in terms of the accuracy of the munitions and the strike.
War in Gaza Strip
The conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated on 7 October 2023, when Hamas launched a massive rocket attack on Israeli territory and carried out a large-scale attack on civilian and military targets. Hundreds of Israelis were killed in the attacks, which was the largest terrorist attack on Israel in a decade.
Israel immediately launched a retaliatory military operation in the Gaza Strip aimed at destroying Hamas's infrastructure and leadership. Since then, hostilities have continued, including rocket attacks and ground operations by both sides. The conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties and has raised international concern.
Currently, Israel continues to conduct air strikes against Hamas targets, including command centers and terrorist leaders. Hamas, in turn, is firing rockets at Israeli cities. The main fighting is concentrated in the Gaza Strip.
At the same time, Hamas continues to use humanitarian zones to cover its terrorist operations, which complicates the situation and causes international concern due to the growing number of civilian casualties.
On September 7, the IDF destroyed a Hamas command post in the northern Gaza Strip, which was located in a former school.
After attempts to reach a peace agreement with the involvement of the United States, in early September, Hamas militants executed a group of Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip.
