Israel eliminates Hamas terrorist who carried out massacre at festival on October 7
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) eliminated a Hamas terrorist involved in the killings of participants at the Nova festival during the October 7, 2023, invasion. Additionally, the military struck dozens of military targets belonging to Islamic militants in the Gaza Strip, according to the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) Telegram channel.
The counter-terrorism operation took place during the night of January 16. Israeli forces eliminated a terrorist from the Nukhba unit (a division of Hamas' military wing), Muhammad Hasham Zahedi Abu Al-Rus, who infiltrated Israel on October 7, 2023, and participated in the massacre at the Nova Music Festival.
Additionally, over the past 24 hours, the IDF carried out strikes on approximately 50 terror targets in the Gaza Strip. Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists were targeted, as well as military facilities, weapons storage depots, launchers, weapons production sites, and observation posts.
Before the strikes, the military took numerous measures to minimize the risk of harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure. These measures included aerial surveillance, precision-guided munitions, and additional intelligence data.
Israel's war with Hamas and the peace agreement
On January 15, Israel and Hamas reached a three-phase agreement for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the exchange of hostages. The negotiations between the parties were mediated by the US, Qatar, and Egypt. The document is set to come into effect on January 19.
However, on January 16, the Israeli government accused Hamas of reneging on certain terms of the agreement and postponed the meeting to finalize the deal.
According to media reports, the Israeli Cabinet and military cabinet may approve the agreement on Friday, January 17.
