The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) opened fire on Palestinian suspects who posed a threat to troops stationed in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. The unidentified individuals were neutralized, reports The Times of Israel.

The Times of Israel reminded that Israeli troops are still stationed in the Gaza Strip, despite a ceasefire agreement with Hamas. The military has warned Palestinians several times not to approach areas where IDF forces are located.

According to the military, the suspects who approached the troops in Rafah were shot.

"The IDF is acting in accordance with the ceasefire agreement, and is maintaining a security zone in accordance with the agreement. Further details are under review," the statement read.

Graphic footage shared on social media shows a Palestinian being shot while attempting to drag the body of a teenager who was also shot. However, it is unclear whether these images are indeed from Rafah or related to the same incident reported by the Israeli military.

Israel-Hamas peace agreement

Following negotiations that began in the spring of last year, Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas signed a ceasefire agreement and a hostage exchange deal on January 16.

The agreement came into effect on January 19. Hamas militants released the first three hostages, while Israel freed 90 Palestinian prisoners.

Israel initiated a ceasefire regime in the Gaza Strip. Additionally, IDF forces began withdrawing from the city of Rafah in the southern part of the strip.

Earlier, the Israeli military eliminated a Hamas terrorist involved in killings during the October 7, 2023, invasion from the Gaza Strip.
