An iron that leaves dark stains or limescale marks on clothes can ruin even freshly washed garments. It is important to clean the soleplate and steam vents regularly, as the buildup of dirt and mineral deposits is one of the most common causes of stains during ironing, according to Southern Living.

How often should you clean your iron?

The frequency of deep cleaning depends on how often you use the iron.

It should be cleaned about once or twice a year to keep it in excellent condition. However, if you notice any sticky residue or dirt on the iron, it should be cleaned immediately.

What to avoid

When cleaning an iron, avoid the following:

  • Cleaning products — this refers to harsh or abrasive cleaners, which can damage the iron's exterior coating.
  • Tap water — distilled water is best for cleaning because it does not contain minerals or metals.

How to clean the inside of an iron

What you'll need:

  • Vinegar
  • Distilled water
  • A clean cotton cloth
  • Cotton swabs
  • Optional: baking soda or salt

First, always check the manufacturer's cleaning recommendations. If you no longer have the manual, you can usually find it online.

For a homemade cleaning solution, mix 1/2 cup of vinegar with 1/2 cup of water and pour it into the reservoir. Turn on the iron, set it to steam mode, wait five minutes, then press the steam button for 30 seconds. Repeat this process four or five times.

Afterward, switch off the iron, allow it to cool, and pour out any remaining vinegar solution. Repeat the process using distilled water to remove any residue.

How to clean the iron's soleplate

There are several ways to clean the soleplate.

Using vinegar, soak a clean cotton cloth and place the cold soleplate on top of it. Make sure the surface underneath will not be damaged by vinegar. Leave it there for 30 minutes, then wipe dry.

You can also make a paste using baking soda and water in a 2:1 ratio. Apply the paste and gently rub in circular motions, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Tips for keeping your iron clean longer

Drain the water. To avoid stains on clothing, empty the water reservoir after each use. This helps prevent mold or mildew from forming and damaging garments.

Use the correct setting. When ironing fabrics that may melt, such as polyester, always set the temperature according to the garment's care label. Most irons also have fabric-specific settings that indicate which materials they are safe to use on.
