Iranian armed forces are on high alert, keeping a finger on the trigger as US military ships head toward the Middle East, states IRGC Commander General Mohammad Pakpour.
A source close to Iran’s National Security Council said the warning comes amid increased US pressure, including the deployment of a US carrier strike group led by the USS Abraham Lincoln to the region.
Pakpour warned the US and Israel to avoid miscalculations, noting that Iranian forces remain at heightened readiness.
Iranian military forces emphasized that they are ready to follow any orders from their command, which, in their view, makes the situation extremely tense. The statement comes amid ongoing large-scale anti-government protests in the country, which have been met with harsh crackdowns.
“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard and dear Iran stand more ready than ever, finger on the trigger, to execute the orders and directives of the Commander-in-Chief,” said General Pakpour, commenting on the deployment of the U.S. naval fleet closer to Iran.
Fox News notes that the US has confirmed sending a massive fleet to the Persian Gulf just in case, while stressing that it hopes to avoid combat.
Former President Donald Trump had previously threatened Tehran with military action in response to the violent suppression of protests and the mass killings of civilians.
The protests in Iran were fueled in large part by the country’s severe economic deterioration and its consequences.
