Iran’s elite Quds Force planned to assassinate Israel’s ambassador in Mexico, but the US and international partners foiled the plot, according to CNN.

According to a US official, Iran planned the assassination of Israeli Ambassador to Mexico Einat Kranz Neiger. The plot was initiated in late 2024 and remained active through the first half of 2025; however, the threat has since been neutralized and no longer poses a security concern.

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs thanked Mexico for disrupting the Iranian-led terrorist network and stated that Israeli intelligence and security services will continue cooperating with international partners to prevent threats from Iran and its proxies against Israeli and Jewish targets worldwide.

"We thank Mexico for thwarting a terrorist network directed by Iran that sought to attack Israel’s ambassador in Mexico," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Iran, meanwhile, rejected all accusations, calling them a "media invention, a great big lie" aimed at damaging relations with Mexico.

Israel has long accused Iran of planning attacks on Jewish and Israeli targets abroad. In August this year, Australia expelled the Iranian ambassador after its intelligence services linked Iran to at least two antisemitic attacks on Australian soil. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also announced that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) would be designated as a terrorist organization.

Iran has also previously plotted assassinations of senior US officials, particularly following the killing of IRGC commander Qasem Soleimani in January 2020. According to CNN, former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former National Security Adviser John Bolton were among the potential targets.

This case underscores the ongoing threat of international terrorism posed by Iran and the importance of global coordination among intelligence and security agencies to prevent such attacks.

Ambassador Einat Kranz Neiger has held her position since August 2023.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump revealed that he had played a key role in coordinating Israel’s strike on Iran.
