Tehran rejected Washington's demands regarding its nuclear program during a recent visit by US special envoy Steve Witkoff to Iran. At the same time, it put forward its own condition, Tehran Times reports.

According to the agency, the negotiations began at the residence of the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Oman, Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, who acted as a mediator. In total, fewer than 10 written messages were exchanged between the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Abbas Araghchi, and Witkoff.

In his messages, Araghchi stated that Tehran took part in indirect negotiations to assess the sincerity of the American side. In particular, he emphasized that Iran does not plan to abandon its nuclear program. In return, Tehran will take measures to provide guarantees against the militarization of nuclear activities, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be the only external organization that will have access to Iranian nuclear facilities.

In addition, Tehran wants to lift sanctions in many sectors that the States will no longer be able to return to under other pretexts.

"Araghchi also stipulated that a general framework agreement was necessary for the continuation of the talks. If the U.S. objects to the framework proposed by Iran during the initial session, it should present its own alternative for Iran to consider," the Tehran Times added.

US and Iran nuclear deal

During his second presidential term, Donald Trump initiated an attempt to conclude a new nuclear deal with Iran, addressing the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with a corresponding proposal. In his address, the American leader, in particular, warned Tehran of the possibility of bombardment in case of refusal to cooperate.

The first round of indirect negotiations took place on April 12.
