Iran can develop fissile material for nuclear weapons in 1-2 weeks, says Blinken
Iran is capable of developing fissile material for nuclear weapons in one to two weeks. US Secretary of State Antony Blinkenwarns of Iran's growing nuclear capabilities at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado.
According to him, after the collapse of the Iranian nuclear deal, Tehran is rapidly increasing its uranium enrichment technology.
Blinken said that if the agreement on Iran's nuclear program of April 2, 2015, had continued to be in force, Iran would have been much further away from the ability to produce fissile materials. He specified that it would have been a one-year period.
“(Iran - ed.) is now probably one or two weeks away from doing that,” Blinken said.
He clarified that Iran had not yet developed nuclear weapons.
Iran's nuclear ambitions
As part of the 2015 agreement, Iran limited its nuclear program in exchange for a reduction in economic sanctions. Yet, in 2018, then-US President Donald Trump abandoned the deal.
Western countries and Israel say that Iran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons, although Tehran denies this. According to the media, Iran allegedly has enough uranium reserves to build three nuclear bombs.
Russia may also help Iran develop nuclear weapons in exchange for military assistance, the media say.
