India announces nuclear aircraft carrier as part of defense overhaul

India has announced plans to build its first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier as part of a 15-year defense modernization program, AP reports.
The official approval and details of the plan to modernize its armed forces and strengthen national security were announced by Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on September 5, 2025.
The plan involves the construction of the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier as part of an ambitious 15-year defense modernization program.
The new nuclear aircraft carrier is expected to replace outdated models and significantly increase the operational range and autonomy of the fleet. This strategic move is aimed at strengthening India's position in the Indian Ocean and countering China's growing naval presence in the region.
The program also envisages the integration of Indian fighters, such as the Rafale-M and other developments, instead of using Russian MiG-29Ks.
In addition, the introduction of modern launch technologies is being discussed, in particular, electromagnetic aircraft launch systems (EMALS) used in the US Navy Gerald-class aircraft carriers.
India currently has two aircraft carriers: INS Vikramaditya, purchased from Russia, and INS Vikrant, built in-house.
Russia is researching the investments required to produce Su-57 fighters in India.
India has stated that it needs at least two or three squadrons of fifth-generation aircraft, with the Russian Su-57 and American F-35 among the main contenders.
