The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, during a speech at the Argentine Council on International Relations (CARI), stated that he wants to run for the position of UN Secretary-General, which will become vacant in 2026.

"I am considering it, and I am considering it very seriously. That is all I can say at this moment," Grossi said.

Grossi noted that the selection process for the successor of the current UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has not yet begun.

"This process will begin at the end of this year when the United Nations General Assembly publishes the official call for nominations," he added.

Grossi also spoke about the "paralysis" of the UN Security Council.

"It cannot move forward. I believe that international decision-makers must work with the reality they have, not with the one they wish they had. If we had a Security Council that worked perfectly, we obviously wouldn’t have the conflicts that we have," Grossi stated.
