Hungary will continue importing Russian gas through Türkiye. Budapest and Ankara agreed on further transit, said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán following a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, MTI reports.

Orbán said that during the meeting, they discussed energy issues.

The Prime Minister recalled that Hungary recently reached an agreement with the US ensuring that American sanctions against Lukoil and Rosneft would not affect Hungary. Afterwards, Budapest arranged further deliveries with Moscow.

"And today, we agreed with President Erdoğan that the Turks will secure the route for all of this," Orban said.

He added that such guarantees are "serious business" and will be necessary, as 7.5 billion cubic meters of gas were delivered to Hungary via Türkiye just this year.

Hungary’s dependence on Russian gas and oil

Since the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, Hungary has refused to seek alternatives to Russian gas and oil and continues active trade with Russia.

At the end of September, the Hungarian Prime Minister assured that his country would not abandon Russian oil, claiming that any other supply source would be less reliable.

Hungary also threatened Ukraine with cutting electricity exports if Ukrainian defenders continued their attacks on the Druzhba oil pipeline.

One such attack occurred last week. According to RBC-Ukraine sources, an explosion on the pipeline occurred near the village of Kazinskiye Vyselki, along the Taganrog-Lipetsk section of the oil pipeline.
