Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that Budapest does not intend to support a unified European Union stance on Greenland in response to recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, according to Szijjártó’s comments at a press conference in Prague.

He said that Hungary considers this issue a bilateral matter that falls outside the EU’s competence. Therefore, the Hungarian authorities do not view the discussion over Greenland’s future as a topic requiring a Europe-wide response.

Szijjártó emphasized that, given this position, Hungary will not join any joint EU statement on the matter, underlining Budapest’s unwillingness to interfere in the bilateral dispute.

“We consider this a bilateral issue that can be resolved through negotiations between the two sides. I do not believe this is an EU matter - so we stated yesterday at the meeting of permanent representatives that we do not see it as necessary or possible to issue a joint EU statement,” he said.

Greenland’s security

According to RBC-Ukraine, Denmark and Greenland have proposed that NATO establish a mission in the Arctic to strengthen regional security.

The proposal came after a meeting in Brussels between Danish Defense Minister Trolls Lund Poulsen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt.

Denmark is also sending additional troops and the army commander to Greenland to reinforce the contingent amid rising security concerns.

On the evening of January 19, a significant reinforcement for Danish forces was scheduled to arrive in Kangerlussuaq, including Army Major General Peter Bojsen, the commander-in-chief. The exact number of troops has not been disclosed.

Due to the escalating situation in Greenland, the Danish government decided not to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, prioritizing control over developments in this strategically important region.
