Hungary opposes victory over Russia: Orban slams EU strategy

In Europe, debates are intensifying over the European Union’s role in the military conflict. Hungary has expressed disagreement with Brussels’ course and questions the strategic goals of the bloc, according to Hír TV.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán spoke out against the EU’s military orientation. In a statement made on September 28, he noted that calls to strengthen the EU’s military capabilities are becoming increasingly frequent in Brussels. According to Orbán, the EU’s strategic goal is described as achieving long-term victory over Russia.
“In Brussels, they openly say: the goal of the decade is to defeat Russia in the East. That means every European, every business, and every EU state must serve this goal. We, the Hungarians, do not want this! The EU has become a military project,” Orbán emphasized.
Criticism of EU policy
The Hungarian prime minister emphasized that the European Union is moving toward increased armament and military projects. According to him, current developments resemble the actions of old empires that sought to dominate other nations. This transformation of the EU raises concerns in Budapest and creates the basis for further divisions within the bloc.
Hungary has made it clear it will not give up Russian energy resources despite pressure from the US. Orbán stated that he discussed this issue with Donald Trump on September 26, following Trump’s comments about a possible call for Budapest to stop purchasing Russian oil.
A complete EU ban on Russian energy resources would place Hungary in serious economic difficulty, with losses for a country with an inefficient economy potentially exceeding 4% of GDP.
