How to sleep properly in daytime
Some sleep can give you a rest, but sometimes it will only lead to irritation and poor health. Under the right conditions and the right parameters, sleep can bring many health benefits, according to Hartford Healthcare.
Why sleeping during the day is good for you
Daytime rest can give you many benefits. It can increase your alertness and improve productivity and reaction time. It can also reduce fatigue or drowsiness and improve your mood.
A study published last year in the journal Sleep Health found that a short nap can correlate with an increase in brain volume. Our brains tend to shrink as we age, but it was found that the brains of those who are regular nappers are large enough to compensate for aging for up to 6.5 years.
Taking a short rest during the day also stimulates creativity, improves parenting, and increases joy.
How to sleep properly during the day
Keep your nap short, no more than 20 minutes. If you make it longer, you may have trouble falling asleep at night.
According to the American Sleep Association, a 15-30-minute nap during the day can give you an extra boost of energy during the day, but it won't replace any nighttime sleep. Adults should sleep around the same time every day and never for longer than 30 minutes.
Sleep on the couch, not on the bed
Although your bed seems like an obvious choice for a break, experts caution against getting too cozy under the covers, suggesting that you choose a sofa instead.
This way, you'll be relaxed enough to get 20 minutes of sleep, but not so relaxed that you'll oversleep.
Choose the right time of day to sleep
It is best to sleep in between 1-3 p.m. In the afternoon, your body experiences a natural circadian downturn or drop in energy levels, making this time ideal for a nap. Do not sleep late in the afternoon or early in the evening, as this can jeopardize your ability to get a good night's rest.
