As the weather cools, mice are more likely to search for food and shelter for the winter, so they may enter homes, garages, and outbuildings. One of the most effective preventive measures is to find and seal openings that rodents could use to get inside.

As RBC-Ukraine reports, the US Environmental Protection Agency offers recommendations for protecting homes from rodents.

Check gaps around pipes and doors

Mice can squeeze through very small openings. That's why you should carefully inspect where water pipes, gas lines, and other utilities enter the house.

Also check around doors and windows, ventilation openings, and where the walls meet the foundation. Pay particular attention to the garage, basement, and outbuildings.

You can seal small openings with materials rodents cannot easily chew through. For larger gaps, experts recommend using wire mesh, sheet metal, cement, or other durable materials.

Don't leave food accessible to mice

Even if you seal all obvious gaps, rodents may still be attracted to easily accessible food. Store grains, flour, pet food, and other products in tightly sealed containers.

Clean up crumbs and food scraps regularly, and keep trash cans covered. Don't leave pet food bowls out overnight, especially in areas where rodents can access them.

Inspect the area around your home

Protection starts outside the house, too. Firewood, boxes, trash, and other items piled against exterior walls can provide convenient hiding places for mice.

Remove potential nesting spots and avoid creating conditions around the house that attract rodents. Keep garbage bins secure, and don't leave food waste accessible near the building.

How to tell if you already have mice in your home

One of the clearest signs is small droppings in cabinets, pantries, near food supplies, or along walls. You may also notice gnawed packaging, tracks on surfaces, or damaged materials.

If you see these signs, it's important not only to get rid of the rodents but also to identify how they entered the building. Otherwise, the problem may return even after you eliminate the mice.
