Heartburn can catch you off guard and ruin your day, but there's a simple way to get rid of the discomfort in just a few minutes - and you won’t need any medication for it, according to the Instagram page of American gastroenterologist Joseph Salhab.

What helps

Heartburn is a burning sensation, usually caused by stomach acid entering the esophagus. Gastroenterologist Joseph Salhab named two methods that can help with heartburn or acid reflux.

"Pop in some sugar-free gum or a lozenge and start chewing, and start moving. You will notice that after a few minutes, your heartburn goes significantly better," the doctor explained.

This happens because the production of saliva in the mouth increases, and it travels down the esophagus, creating a protective barrier against stomach acid.

The gastroenterologist also notes that the act of chewing tricks the body into thinking you're eating. When this happens, your esophagus begins to move and contract, which helps clear excess acid from the esophagus.

Studies show that regular walking can support gut health by reducing inflammation and improving digestion.

Therefore, if you're prone to heartburn, it might be better not to sit down right after eating. Take a short walk, as it can help lower blood sugar levels, improve longevity, and reduce stress.

What causes heartburn in the stomach

The main causes of heartburn are:

  • overeating - a large volume of food stretches the stomach and increases pressure, which can lead to acid entering the esophagus;
  • fried, spicy foods - these stimulate acid production;
  • coffee, alcohol, chocolate, and carbonated drinks;
  • smoking - it stimulates acidity;
  • stress - it affects stomach motility and increases sensitivity to acid;
  • lying down after eating - this promotes acid reflux;
  • pregnancy or excess weight - increased pressure on the stomach encourages reflux.
