With the arrival of severe frosts, many parents are worried: should they take their children outside when temperatures drop sharply?

Evidence-Based Doctors of Ukraine explains how long kids can safely spend time outdoors in freezing weather.

Is it safe for children to play in the cold?

Experts reassure that winter walks are not only allowed but also beneficial for children’s health. The key is to monitor the child’s well-being and follow simple safety rules.

Specialists note that children can safely play outside even at temperatures down to -15°C (5°F).

Fresh air strengthens the immune system, improves sleep, and supports normal development. However, parents should also consider wind, humidity, and overall comfort.

How long can children stay outside in the cold?

The duration of outdoor time depends primarily on the child’s age:

  • Children under 1 year: Around one hour at a time. If the weather is good, they can go outside twice a day.

  • Preschoolers: Up to three hours outdoors if they stay active and do not feel cold.

Signs that it’s time to go inside include fussiness, lethargy, or cold cheeks and hands.

How to dress children for winter

The most common mistake is overdressing. Doctors recommend layering: several light layers keep warmth in and allow free movement.

Clothing should:

  • Cover the neck and ears

  • Be warm but not restrictive

  • Allow the child to move freely

Babies in strollers should be covered with an extra blanket, as they move less and lose heat faster.

Tips for safe winter walks

Experts suggest following these rules:

  • Active children generate their own warmth, so avoid adding unnecessary layers

  • Children lying in strollers or on sleds should wear one extra layer compared to what parents wear

  • At temperatures below -15°C (5°F) or during strong winds, it’s better to limit outdoor time to brief outings or just indoor ventilation

  • Choose comfortable winter footwear that does not compress the foot or restrict circulation

  • Apply protective cream to cheeks and hands before going outside

  • Gloves are essential even for short walks

When it’s better to stay indoors

Walks should be canceled if the child feels unwell, has a fever, or if there are strong winds with high humidity, which increase the sensation of cold.

Doctors emphasize that the main guide for parents is not the thermometer reading, but the child’s comfort and safety. Properly organized winter walks provide more benefits than harm, and fresh, crisp air supports children’s health.
