The duration and quality of our lives depend on the health of our heart and brain. That's why it's essential to take care of their condition and prevent the onset of diseases. A new study reported by Medical News confirms that artichokes can greatly help in this regard.

What makes artichokes beneficial

Artichokes are a source of minerals, antioxidants, and polyphenols. The edible part is the bud, covered with green leafy bracts. The stems, leaves, and outer bracts are not consumed, although they also contain necessary phytochemicals.

According to scientists, artichokes can be a valuable source of biologically active compounds with potential therapeutic applications in cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and cardiovascular diseases.

Bioactive compounds

This product is rich in bioactive compounds. It has low-fat content and a high level of insoluble fiber, plenty of vitamin C, inulin, minerals (phosphorus, potassium, and sodium), phenolic compounds and their derivatives, and flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory and cleansing properties.

Chlorogenic acid is the main component of artichoke extract. It contributes to improving well-being.

Antimicrobial effects

Although the antibacterial properties of artichokes have not been thoroughly studied, research indicates inhibitory activity against various pathogens. Some substances from artichokes have been found to disrupt bacterial cell walls. Extracts from the stem, leaves, and heads of artichokes inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli.

Studies also report on the antifungal action of artichoke extracts. Preliminary data suggest that artichoke extracts may inhibit virus replication and interfere with virus attachment to host cells.

Artichoke and the cardiovascular system

Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death worldwide. Artichoke extracts can reduce cholesterol synthesis. Research has shown that adding artichoke leaf extract to obese rats improves their lipid profile and heart markers. Artichoke extracts can also prevent the development of atherosclerotic plaques in rats fed a high-fat diet.

Individuals with high cholesterol who received two doses of artichoke extract for eight weeks experienced significant improvements in overall cholesterol. A study involving healthy men and men with mild hypertension found that 12 weeks of concentrated artichoke leaf juice intake reduced blood pressure.

Neuroprotective effects

Research on a mouse model of obesity has shown that alcohol extracts of artichokes have a beneficial effect on neuroinflammation parameters. Another study found a decrease in the production of inflammatory cytokines.

Scientists have found that compounds from artichoke extract can protect against memory impairment, anxiety, and depression. The neuroprotective effect of artichokes has also been demonstrated in a mouse model of sporadic Alzheimer's disease. Artichoke leaf extracts improve cognitive function and restore spatial memory.
