Headquarters of Japan's ruling party attacked with firebombs
On Saturday, a man threw several firebombs at the headquarters of Japan's ruling party in Tokyo. No reports of injuries have been received, according to AP.
Tokyo police declined to comment, stating that the case is still under investigation.
The man, who was arrested at the scene, crashed his car into a fence, according to Japanese media from the site. The motives for his attack remain unclear.
The ruling Liberal Democratic Party has grown increasingly unpopular with the public due to a financial scandal involving questionable funding and suspected tax evasion.
The party declined to comment on the attack, referring all questions to the police.
Japanese election
Japan's lower house parliamentary elections are scheduled for October 27.
The Liberal Democratic Party recently chose a new leader, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, hoping to present a fresh image. However, polls show that its popularity is sharply declining, though it remains unclear whether it will lose control of the majority in the lower house in the upcoming election due to divisions within the opposition.
Meanwhile, key US lawmakers have urged Japan to strengthen restrictions on selling semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China. They warned that if Tokyo does not take action, Washington may impose its own restrictions on Japanese companies.
